Firefly Removal From CG Renders In Nuke

Anyone who has received footage to comp from a modern renderer has experienced the ‘fun’ of having to remove these very bright pixel artefacts (fireflies).

There are many workarounds I’ve seen in different facilities, but hadn’t seen anyone who had a solution that worked for most of these artefacts (without causing other issues from the frame blend or colour smear/average techniques employed). That is until I stumbled across Stefan Muellers blog where he talks about the issue and offers up a gizmo to fix it.

Check out his blog post here to see how it all works with a couple of examples.

If you’re impatient and just want his gizmo, here it is.
